Despite its title, The Great American Novel won’t make it onto the top 10 of most Philip Roth fans, but it has its moments. A story of a travelling baseball club in the 1940s, it’s a bit of a messy attempt at magic realism but with a few good jokes. Its 1973 publication gives a clue to what substances may have influenced its composition.

This Sporting Life looks even better as time passes as a memorial of attitudes, lifestyles and communities that have completely disappeared for better and/or worse.

President Paul Kagame's public expression of his frustration at Arsenal's loss on the opening day of the season in August 2021 may be the first time, at least it was for me, that football fans took any notice of "Visit Rwanda" on the jersey.
